Shells, Scales, and Sewing

February 13, 2017 by Maggie Leave a Comment

So I’m pretty terrible at updating this thing, it would seem. I have lots of finished projects that deserve their own posts, so those will have to wait until later. Right now, a short showcase of some finished gifts and some works in progress!

Shells

As a belated xmas gift, I crocheted a pair of super cute, lacy fingerless gloves. I’d searched for a long time for a dainty-ish fingerless glove pattern that wasn’t a complete nightmare to crochet (More on that later). I wound up on Maaike van Koert‘s Fingerless Gloves pattern from CreJJtion. The free pattern is written in three languages (Dutch, English, Spanish) with separate sections for US/UK terminology.

I ended up using some mystery sock-ish weight yarn from my stash and a C (2.75mm) hook. The gloves were beautiful!

Glove one!

Glove 2 on the hook.

I was kind of sad to see them go, and I’m really hoping she likes them — they’re super soft, stretchy and very pretty.

A few days later, I was contemplating what I wanted to make with my ~900 yds of Cascade Yarns – Heritage Wave in plume. It’s a pretty blue/gray gradient tweed sock yarn that I picked up because I absolutely had to have it, though had no project in mind.

I found a ton of patterns that I wanted to try out, but wasn’t sure if the yarn would be too busy for a complicated shawl and didn’t really like the knitted swatches I saw online. I decided to give the shell gloves another shot. The results are lovely!

That’s a gradient, not a weird shadow.

Both gloves in cold winter sunlight… And a little bit of the remaining yarn from the skein.

Neither photo really does the gloves justice… They’re actually a lot more blue than gray. My favorite part about them is that the gradient continues from one glove into the next and both have a good range of light and dark.

I have noticed since wearing them that the yarn does pill/shred pretty easily, so I may need to be more delicate with them than I tend to be on my usual gloves…

Scales

So I mentioned before that I had tried to make some lacy gloves in the past… I bought some very pretty red-orange glittery sock yarn at a craft pop-up a while back and thought it would be perfect as a pair of gloves (with the intention of them looking like the ones pictured in the post. No such luck… The gloves turned out bulky and the pattern was unpleasant to work on… I wound up with only one finished glove that spent over a year in the bottom of a pile of winter hats, waiting for me to unravel it and find something else to do.

And unravel it I did.

After going back through my bundles of favorites on Ravelry (I save a lot of patterns), I finally decided to pick up a project I’d wanted to start for a while. This poor, unfortunate glove is in the process of being reborn as a super cool Dragon Egg Bag, but with some adjustments.

You can kinda see the gold shimmer in the yarn…

Slightly different angle

The base of the bag is quite a big bigger than the pattern recommends, and the yarn quite a bit thinner… It’s gonna take a while, but hopefully it’ll come out looking nifty.

Sewing

Outside of the bag, I’ve got a few works in progress that are paused because I don’t really feel much like sewing lots of pieces together at the moment… So here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come!

Dalek base… With mechanical pencil for size reference.

Tiny rainbow gradient octopus with measuring tape for size reference.

Reddit alien… That I’m not super happy with. Probably gonna tweak the pattern slightly.
